Survey for Immigration Practitioners on Paths to Regularisation - still open

The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants is still collecting responses to a short survey aimed at immigration practitioners who represent or advise undocumented migrants seeking to regularise their status in the UK. They are collecting this data to inform their project looking at how best to advocate for new and better paths to regularisation. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]. The "Routes to Regularisation" Survey should take around 5 minutes. All answers are anonymous.

Would you like to join in with the Great Legal Quiz on 20th Nov? Host your own fundraising quiz on Wednesday 20th November to raise some unrestricted funding for your free legal advice organisation. Engaging your supporters in a fun evening couldn’t be easier – we provide the questions which are like a pub quiz, not on the law! All you need to do is find a venue! Could be your office, a bar or whatever suits your team! You then feed back your top scores the next day and we will announce the top teams in the country! A shield goes to the highest scoring team, and another to the highest fundraising quiz organisers.

New study of the “lawtech ecosystem” - funding awarded to Oxford’s Saïd Business School

A new study by Oxford's Saïd Business School will be launched to study the lawtech 'ecosystem'. The 18-month project will 'map the movement of people and finance in and out of the system,' and aim to enhance the innovation and startup scene by identifying principal players. The government's Economic and Social Research Council has provided £213,000 funding. The project will complement existing University of Oxford research, also funded by the research council, which is seeking to ’unlock the potential for AI for English law’.

New report - Devolution of justice in Wales?

New 556 page report by Commision on Justice in Wales has made 78 recommendations for reform, concluding that that Wales should take over control of both policy and funding from Westminster. Recommendations include: A new justice department of the Welsh government led by a cabinet minister, a Welsh High Court and Court of Appeal, and a criminal legal aid system run on ’Nordic’ public defender lines.

New report on poverty in Scotland

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has produced a new report with some shocking findings about levels of poverty in Scotland. Nearly one in five adults and one in four children live in poverty and the report focuses on the tools that government has to tackle this issue, focusing largely on the role of housing, work and social security.

It outlines why strong public services are essential for achieving gender equality, how the rise of public-private partnerships risks undermining this, and offering policy recommendations that seek to meet the needs of women around the world.
Call for evidence from the Joint Committee on Human Rights

The Joint Committee on Human Rights is calling for evidence on the proposal for a Remedial Order to amend the Human Rights Act 1998. The revised draft Remedial Order would make a targeted amendment to the Human Rights Act with the effect that damages would be available to compensate a person for an act that is incompatible with Article 6 (right to a fair trial) that resulted in the person spending extra time in prison, or caused them to be committed to prison. The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2019.
New resource: Human rights tracker

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has produced a searchable online tool to help track how well the UK is putting its human rights duties into practice. The tool is aimed at civil society organisations, academics, parliamentarians, legal professionals and anyone with an interest in human rights to learn about the UK’s international human rights obligations, and to track how the UK Government is performing against them.
Office for Civil Society consultation: Statutory guidance review for local youth services

The Office for Civil Society have launched a consultation to review the guidance setting out the statutory duty placed on Local Authorities to provide appropriate local services to improve young people’s wellbeing and they need responses by 1 December 2019. The review is designed to highlight the positive role Local Authorities should play in the provision of youth services. They want to know: about the statutory guidance document; what's working well and what government can do to strengthen it further.
Mayor launches online hub to help Londoners understand their rights at work
