Opportunity: The Sentencing Council is Accepting Recommendations for the Revised Drug Offences Guidelines

The Sentencing Council has launched a 12-week consultation process in order to review and revise the 2012 Drug Offences Guidelines. The process will run from 15 January to 7 April 2020 and is open to everyone. The revised Drug Offences Guideline will provide sentencers across the Crown Court and magistrates’ courts with guidance for various drug offences, which will assist in achieving the Council’s objective of consistent sentencing, and provide transparency for the public regarding the penalties for these offences. Sentencing Council’s Report on the Relationship Between Offenders’ Sex, Ethnicity and Sentencing Outcomes for Drug Supply Offences

The Sentencing Council has published a report considering the extent to which the sentence imposed for drug supply offences may vary with an offender's sex or ethnicity, after controlling for other factors considered by the judge. The report looks specifically at the likelihood of receiving an immediate custodial sentence, and the length of the sentence imposed for those receiving an immediate custodial sentence.

Lex have created a great free legal letter-builder service for those whose employers have failed to pay them the holiday pay that they are contractually entitled to, and those who have lost some of their holiday entitlement for reasons outside their control. Through a series of YES/NO questions the service helps LIPs create their own legal letter to send on to their employer.

For their 40th anniversary, ASA are holding a conference to celebrate the "good will and good works" of the advice sector, a phrase coined by Lady Hale, to describe those who work tirelessly to ensure people are able to gain access to justice. The conference will be held on the 1st and 2nd of April 2020, in Manchester. The conference will reflect on their 40-year history to think forward to the new challenges and experiences facing the sector and will aim to bring people together from across the scope of social welfare legal advice.
